Kurniawan Adi Saputro

Kurniawan Adi Saputro is a researcher, writer, and lecturer at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta, where he coordinates research in the Department of Photography. His work engages with visual media, climate justice, and cultural activism, exploring how local knowledge can shape public understanding of environmental and social challenges.

Trained in media and communication studies, Kurniawan holds a PhD from Sheffield Hallam University, with a dissertation on audience engagement during the 2010 Mt. Merapi eruption. He is the author or editor of several books on climate justice, community festivals, and low-carbon living, and has contributed to international publications on digital activism, disaster resilience, and participatory media. His research often bridges academic and grassroots perspectives, with recent projects addressing the lives of women and disabled people affected by climate change, as well as the cultural economies of community-run festivals in Indonesia.
