Before I joined PRAKSIS Teen Advisory Board, I felt out of touch with anything that has to do with art, and usually ignored it, seeing it as different to me. In Character has shown me that art has a place for everyone. You don't need to be a singer, good at drawing, a dancer or a creative person - you can be anyone and still be a part of art somewhere.
- PTAB member Sumaya
This three part book is for the art-curious, for people teaching art, for arts spaces that are open to challenging their ways of working, and anyone interested in new experiences and ideas. It shares both instructions based on activity that Teen Advisory Boards (TAB) at PRAKSIS and Index were part of, and topics that TAB feel are important to discuss right now.
In Character: The Publication is made by the Teen Advisory Boards of PRAKSIS and Index, together with team members from PRAKSIS, Index and Publics. Sayed Sattar Hasan is a British born artist living in Oslo, Norway. He describes his current artistic approach as 'post-pop, conceptual crafts', and is increasingly drawn to storytelling. His work explores the myth of self and collective identities; heritage and belonging; the fault lines between tradition and change; and the need for reinvention. The narratives Hasan develops are often interwoven with his own biography and told with a degree of humour.
Hasan holds an MA from Goldsmiths University, London. His work has been shown internationally including; New Art Exchange (UK), Stephen Lawrence gallery (UK), Southbank Centre (UK), Intercultural Museum (Norway), Bomuldsfabriken (Norway), Artspace Boan (S. Korea), 2nd Changjiang, Video and Photography Biennale (China), Ikhlaq-Ul-Zahoor Gallery (Pakistan), LagosPhoto Festival (Nigeria), East-Midlands Pavillion-Venice Biennale 15 and is held in private and public collections including REV Collection, Oslo Museum, (Norway), Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum (Norway). His work will feature in ‘Det Kaller det Kunst’, the opening exhibition of the National Museum, Norway, in 2022. Until summer 2022 Hasan holds a prestigious studio award at Oslo City Hall.

How do we know? - Institutional listening and young agency in the arts was co-created by 16-21 year olds participating in the Teen Advisory Boards of Index (Stockholm) and PRAKSIS (Oslo) together with PUBLICS Youth (Helsinki) and organisers at Index, PRAKSIS and PUBLICS, as well as others they met along the way. The young boards at these organisations convene regularly and work to improve artistic and institutional practice from the inside.
This book represents two years of activity and features contributions from both the 2020-21 and 2021-22 Teen Advisory Board membership. The first part of the book reflects 2021-22 activities, including TAB members meeting in person together with Publics Youth in Helsinkim where they participated in the conference, Today is Our Tomorrow at PUBLICS. Supporting this are lightly modified reproductions of TAB zines generated in 2020-21: PRAKSIS’s publication In Character: The Game Manual, and Index’s magazine In Character: Index Teen Advisory Board. Together, the three sections offer three distinct perspectives on TAB members’ explorations and discussions.
As well as documenting activities and sharing TAB members’ reflections on the arts and culture today, the sections contain practical details of workshop strategies and practices engaged by board members as a means both to encounter and intervene in the world of the arts. Thus, the book serves not just as documentation of two years of vibrant, joyful creative activity and youthful critical thinking, but as a potential tool for others looking to embed young people’s views, hopes, concerns, experience and knowledge into the core of their organisational and/or cultural practices.
