Join us at PRAKSIS as artists in residence Agnė Jokšė (LT) and Kristiina Mäenpää (FI) introduce their practices through short presentations, followed by discussion.
Jokšė’s work moves through intimacy, language, queerness and relational histories, while Mäenpää’s practice considers temporality, material traces and the spatial conditions of exhibition-making. Until 15 September, the artists are working alongside each other, exploring ideas relating to structures of support, home and domesticity.
Agnė Jokšė (b. 1993) is an artist, writer and artists' rights advocate currently based in Vilnius. Working with approaches associated with autoethnography, Jokšė tells stories in which personal experience, memory and past events intertwine with reflections on love, intimacy, relations and friendship. Often working with video and performative text, their practice investigates parallel histories, compassion, entangled relations, queerness and language. Jokšė’s work has recently been presented at Index, KINDL, Pickle Bar, Centre Pompidou, KADIST, Palais de Tokyo, Kunsthalle Münster, GIBCA, Tallinn Art Hall, Edinburgh Art Festival, e-flux Screening Room, Cell Project Space, Editorial, Whitechapel Gallery and the 14th Baltic Triennial.
Kristiina Mäenpää is a Helsinki-based visual artist working with installation, sculpture and photographic mediums. Her work emphasises the dialogue between artwork and exhibition space, with particular attention to the meanings, histories and durational layers carried by different materials. Mäenpää’s background in photography continues to inform her practice through an interest in temporality, traces and material processes. She approaches the photographic not only as the trace of light on a light-sensitive surface, but more broadly as traces of duration held within materials.
Taking place during PRAKSIS’ 10th anniversary year, the residency builds on PRAKSIS’ experience of thematic group programmes, testing the potential of bringing two practitioners into dialogue over an extended period of time.
The residency is held in connection with Institutional Reimagining — a collaborative project bringing together PRAKSIS, Index, PUBLICS, Simian and Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art (LCCA) to test how small and mid-sized arts organisations can work as a distributed institution. As part of this, the residency offers a supportive space for research and development in relation to early directions for Survival Kit Festival 2027, including questions of housing, cohabitation and the domestic. Survival Kit is organised by LCCA and in 2027 is curated by Paul O’Neill, Director of PUBLICS.
