Join us for the finissage of Yanina Zaichanka’s solo exhibition, this picture never existed. The artist will give a short introduction to the show, followed by audience Q&A. Refreshments and informal conversation will follow.
this picture never existed centres on a missing photograph of Klava, the artist’s late grandmother. A multi-channel sound work and a single embroidery trace the ephemerality of memory: the missing image becomes a gateway into an untold story, and into the layered absences that gather around family histories marked by repression. Moving through silences, omissions, and misrememberings, Zaichanka proposes an intimate, shifting narrative that questions how we relate to and make sense of the past, underscoring what cannot be recovered while allowing for the uncertainties and flaws to be manifested.
Tip: Please arrive from 15:00 to experience the audio installation in full before the discussion starts at 15:30. The sound work is 24 minutes and plays on loop.
